Windows Phones updated unofficially will not be able to update again

first_imgIf you’re one of the folks who used the ChevronWP7 Updater tool to get your hands on NoDo before you carrier pushed it to you, you may be out of luck with future Windows Phone 7 updates. Microsoft announced today that if you updated Windows Phone 7 through unofficial means, your phone won’t be eligible for future Windows Phone updates. In essence, no Mango for you.Over at the Windows Phone Developer Blog today, Brandon Watson gets the unenviable job of telling the WP7 community that if they managed to score the update though unofficial means, their phone does not “contain an official image and cannot be updated further at this time,” according to the blog post. The post goes on to detail exactly how the update process verifies a device, but the core of the explanation is this: if you used any tool other than Microsoft’s officially blessed update process to get NoDo on your device, Microsoft has no way of knowing your Windows Phone is in a “known, good state,” meaning ready and safe to update. So, they say, your phone just won’t get the update.Of course, that leaves a ton of Windows Phone owners who wanted NoDo but were tired of the slow pace Microsoft appears to want to take with WP7 updates. The update was released in March, as promised, but only released to carriers and not directly to handset owners. This move has left many owners without NoDo, waiting for their carrier to release it to them. Others, when they heard that the ChevronWP7 Team had managed to use the Windows Phone Developer Tools to install NoDo, did it themselves. For those that don’t remember the ChevronWP7 Team, they’re the group that first managed to jailbreak Windows Phone 7. Microsoft applauded them, but asked them to take the jailbreak utility down, which they did. Microsoft has since decided to work with them on improving Windows Phone, and in turn, they can continue hacking away without worrying about being sued or shut down.Unfortunately however, users who used their update tool to get NoDo on their phones have no recourse but to perform a factory reset on their Windows Phones, and then allow the device to update naturally. Otherwise, they won’t be able to get future Windows Phone 7 updates, like the one announced on the Windows Phone Developer Blog yesterday or Windows Phone 7.5 next year.Read more at the Windows Phone Developer Bloglast_img read more
