Super Mario SunshineFollowing up the revolutionary Super Mario 64 is tough, and even without that comparison Super Mario Sunshine is weird. But Mario is supposed to be weird. And making a Mario game that opens with a fully voiced sequences about Mario getting thrown in jail and then forced to clean up a tropical island with a water jetpack is super weird. Maybe not the best Mario game, but definitely one of the best GameCube games. F-Zero GXThe last true F-Zero game, F-Zero GX gave players gorgeous blisteringly fast tracks to race through as Captain Falcon and the gang. And the high level of difficulty demanded players treat those tracks with the respect they deserve. As we beg for a new F-Zero let’s remember that the last game was one of the best GameCube games. Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s RequiemPity developer Silicon Knights never made a game as good as Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem ever again. A fiendishly clever horror game, Eternal Darkness broke the fourth wall by having insanity effects appear to mess with your TV settings. And even without this gimmicks, the tense top-flight survival horror gameplay that easily matches up with classic Resident Evil makes this one of the best GameCube games. Mario Kart Double DashMaybe a bit divisive among the Mario Kart fandom, but Mario Kart Double Dash earns points for trying to do cool new things with the franchise. The partner mechanic, with players controlling two characters solo or in co-op, adds a new strategic layer to kart choice and item loadouts. Plus Mario Kart’s foundation of fun is practically made of concrete. Even a mid-level Mario Kart is still one of the best GameCube games. Soul Calibur 2The Soul Calibur series was already a pretty great and respected fighting game franchise. But you can make a game much more interesting if you drop a Nintendo character in it. This weapons fighter was available on multiple systems, but what makes it one of the best GameCube games is the inclusion of Link from The Legend of Zelda exclusively in the GameCube version. Resident Evil 4One of the last best GameCube games, Resident Evil 4 manages to reinvent third-person shooters, cinematic video games action, and Capcom’s already acclaimed survival horror zombie franchise all at once. Trying to explain its greatness in one little blurb doesn’t do it justice. You need to play Resident Evil 4 for yourself. Metroid PrimeThe closest thing the GameCube has to a Mario 64 or Ocarina of time is this masterpiece that translates Metroid’s atmospheric alien exploration perfectly into 3D. It’s a first-person shooter with more emphasis on navigating your environment than blasting bugs and actually makes platforming from this viewpoint tolerable. A straight-up classic from then-newcomers at Retro Studios, Metroid Prime is easily one of the best GameCube games. Viewtiful JoeFrom the minds that would later bring you Okami and Bayonetta, Viewtiful Joe is a sidescrolling action-platformer that has style dripping out of every pore. In this ode to cinema, and especially Japanese action cinema, you play as fanboy-turned Super Sentai and manipulate film itself to bash enemies with finesse. Don’t forget this, one of the best GameCube games. ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ Was Final Mission From Late Nintendo President‘Ring Fit Adventure’ Is a Nintendo Switch Exercise RPG The Nintendo GameCube may not have defined its era of video games the way the NES and SNES did. And unlike the N64, 3D games were already established when the GameCube launched in 2001, so it was less of a generation leap. But the machine did have some great things going for it like a useful handle, a bold purple color scheme, and some truly excellent video games. Here are the best GameCube games.Super Smash Bros. MeleeThe one true Super Smash Bros. game fans still swear by, even if it means closing their minds to future entries. Melee’s fast game speed and high technical execution makes it a favorite among the competitive crowd. But it was also just a leap forward in terms of sheer content compared to the original with new story modes, event modes, and characters from games like Fire Emblem that had never even released in America. Possibly the best GameCube game. Stay on target The Legend of Zelda: The Wind WakerI think time has shown that the once controversially cartoony cel-shaded art style of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was actually a beautiful choice. Also beautiful is the game’s tragic nostalgic view of the drowned Hyrule our new generation of heroes lives and sails above. The meat and potatoes Zelda gameplay here is maybe less substantial than you remember, but for its aesthetic value alone this is one of the best GameCube games. Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue LeaderEven among beloved Star Wars games Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader stands out. No one makes flight action games like Factor 5. Star Wars games could only look better compared to the Star Wars movies of 2001. And as a GameCube launch title, Rogue Leader was a technical showpiece for how great games could look on the machine. It’s definitely one of the best GameCube games. So that’s our list of best GameCube games. For more on retro Nintendo games check out the best N64 games.
