3-year-old falls and drowns in RPV pool

first_imgACCIDENT: Girl’s pediatrician fathersays “everybody loved her in the neighborhood.” By Larry Altman STAFF WRITER A 3-year-old girl slipped through an open gate and drowned in her backyard pool in Rancho Palos Verdes, authorities said Wednesday. Haley Kong’s death on Tuesday was considered a “tragic accident,” sheriff’s Lt. David Coleman said. “She was playing and within a moment she was able to find herself through the crack in a gate and fell in the pool,” Coleman said. Haley’s father, Victor Kong, said he and his wife were out when the accident occurred. His 50-year-old nanny and one grandparent were home. The girl and Kong’s sons, ages 9 and 11, had been swimming earlier. When they had finished, the pool cover had been left open and the gate was not locked, he said. The accident occurred after the boys had gone to soccer practice. It was unknown how long Haley was in the water. “She was just a very lovable, fast- growing, friendly, just a beautiful girl,” said Kong, a pediatrician with an office in Gardena. “I was looking forward to being her soccer coach in a year and doing many things. Everybody loved her in the neighborhood.” Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters were called to the house in the 4000 block of Exultant Drive near Portuguese Bend at 5 p.m., deputy Oscar Butao said. The child was rushed to Little Company of Mary Hospital-San Pedro, where doctors worked to revive her for nearly an hour. “They knew me and they tried the darndest, longer than usual,” Kong said. “I knew it was too much of a hope. When I first got there, I hoped but there was no response to the efforts.” Kong said he had dealt with similar tragedies in the past as a doctor, calling them the hardest thing he had to face. Firefighters assisted the grieving family at the hospital. [email protected] 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
