Boys’ basketball: Falcons upset Hawks

first_imgPALMDALE – The doors to the Palmdale gym were closed more than 40 minutes before the opening tip. The facility had already reached its 1,000-person capacity, leaving nearly 500 people waiting outside Friday night. Knight (24-3, 10-2) missed its opportunity to win the Golden League title outright. “Everyone thought we were the underdogs, but ourselves,” Haynes said. “We knew we were going to come out strong. This win was no fluke.” Palmdale, ranked No. 13 by the Daily News, held the Hawks leading scorer, Jerome Motom, to 11 points, including just four in the secondhalf. No. 5 Knight had the significant height advantage, but Palmdale’s pressure defense limited the Hawks offensively. “We were at our best tonight,” Haynes said. “This is not the same team that struggled earlier in the season.” Those who made it inside, however, were greeted with a stunning upset, as Palmdale rolled to a 75-50 victory over visiting Knight of Palmdale to clinch a share of the Golden League title. Justin Haynes scored a game-high 23 points and Joshua Jackson added 18 for the Falcons (21-5 overall, 12-2 Golden), who never trailed despite entering the game as significant underdogs. center_img Haynes had 18 points in the first half to pace Palmdale to an early lead. The 6-foot-7 wing made a tomahawk dunk with 1:20 remaining in the second quarter to put the Falcons ahead 36-20, their biggest lead of the first half. Knight cut the deficit to 36-25 by halftime, but Palmdale scored the first sevenpoints of the secondhalf en route to a 20-point, third-quarter lead. Christopher Hicks added 14 points for Palmdale, while Steve Delatorre scored 14points for Knight.
