KISSIMMEEE, Fla. (AP) — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the body slam by a school resource officer on a female high school student who appears to lose consciousness after her head hits the concrete in videos taken by other students. Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez said Wednesday that his office was turning over the investigation of what happened between his deputy and a student at Liberty High School in Kissimmee to state investigators “to be sure no one can say that we are looking out for our own.” The deputy has worked for the sheriff’s office for a decade. He has been put on paid administrative leave.
It is intriguing that the No. 1 overall seed in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, the Duke Blue Devils, is tasked with defeating one of only four opponents to beat them in order to advance to the Elite Eight.Duke traveled to Virginia Tech a month ago and, with All-American forward Zion Williamson absent due to a knee injury, lost 77-72. Virginia Tech wins if …The Hokies are able to control the pace in the way they did in the Blacksburg game. They’re going to have to shoot better from long distance; they hit 62.5 percent of their 2-pointers in the earlier victory, but Williamson was not around chewing up space and blocking shots. It would be helpful if perhaps Robinson’s availability frees up Alexander-Walker to be more productive than he was then. Tech must not only keep Williamson out of the lane, but also Barrett, who hit them for 21 points despite going just 1 of 6 from 3-point range.MORE: Ranking Sweet 16 teams’ chances of winning it allSweet 16 pick: DukeThe Hokies surely have confidence from the earlier victory, but they also are aware they got the Devils at the right time. Duke is always in danger of struggling because of its sporadic 3-point shooting, but the Devils also are elite on defense and should be able to get by this game just by shutting down Virginia Tech. SN’s MARCH MADNESS HQLive NCAA bracket | Live scoreboard | Full TV scheduleThe only other teams to beat Duke this season are North Carolina, Gonzaga and Syracuse. The Devils could yet see one or two of those if they are able to continue their quest for the national championship. But there was a time when the NCAA Tournament rules would have prevented any rematch this early in the tournament, so it is curious the Devils would bump into an established nemesis at this point in the event.Duke, No. 1 seedCoach: Mike Krzyzewski (44 years, 39 at Duke)Overall record: 31-5Scoring leader: RJ Barrett (22.9 ppg)Rebounding leader: Zion Williamson (8.9 rpg)Assists leader: Tre Jones (5.7 apg)Famous non-athlete alum: Apple CEO Tim CookVirginia Tech, No. 4 seedCoach: Buzz Williams (12 years, five at Va Tech)Overall record: 26-8Scoring leader: Nickeil Alexander-Walker (16.6 ppg)Rebounding leader: Kerry Blackshear (7.4 rpg)Assists leader: Justin Robinson (5.2 apg)Famous non-athlete alum: Journalist Hoda KotbBest individual matchupJones vs. Robinson. The first time the Hokies and Devils played, Robinson was not available for Tech, and more of the offense was directed by Alexander-Walker. That muted Alexander-Walker’s scoring in that game as it did several others, but he was able to get the job done against Jones, one of the nation’s top on-ball defenders. Can Robinson be as effective? He played 28 minutes against Saint Louis in his first game back from injury, but only went 2 of 7 from the field. The NCAA second-round game against Liberty saw him go 29 minutes and improve his output to 13 points and four assists. Jones had a dreadful game against UCF’s clever defense in the second round, completing just 1 of 8 3-pointers. How Robinson guards him in this game may be more impactful than Jones’ defensive contribution.MORE SWEET 16 PREVIEWSUNC-AUB | UK-UH | MSU-LSU | ZAGS-FSU | UVA-UO | PURDUE-UT | UM-TTMost eye-popping statSince returning from six missed games because of a knee injury, Duke All-American Zion Williamson has averaged 27.6 points on 68.7 oercent shooting from the field. He also has hit 46.7 percent from 3-point range in that stretch. He was the nation’s best player before getting hurt — and now he’s better. Duke wins if …There is no lingering hangover from the team’s middling performance in the second-round game against UCF. There are many who want to draw conclusions about the Devils’ vulnerability from that game, but the Knights were a unique opponent. There isn’t anyone in the tournament like them, because there is no one in the tournamet like 7-6 center Tacko Fall. The question is whether anyone else can pack the lane against the Devils at least in a way that approximates what UCF did with Fall. Williamson has to again be a dynamic force. We don’t have a prior intersection with Williamson and the Hokies to know whether someone like Blackshear can bother him. But no one since his return has been effective in slowing him.
