Prevent “toxic stress” in childhood to offset lifelong problems

first_img“Toxic stress,” or adversity, in early childhood can lead to a lifetime of mental and physical problems—including disruption of the body’s metabolism or brain development —and pediatricians should take a leading role in providing care that addresses the problem, according to two reports in the journal Pediatrics co-authored by Jack P. Shonkoff, Julius B. Richmond FAMRI Professor of Child Health and Development at Harvard School of Public Health and director of the University-wide Center on the Developing Child.Adversity in early childhood has been linked with increases in heart disease, obesity, diabetes and other ailments, as well as learning and social difficulties, according to the reports.“You can modify behavior later, but you can’t rewire disrupted brain circuits,” said Shonkoff, quoted by New York Times op-ed columnist Nicholas Kristof on Jan. 7. “We’re beginning to get a pretty compelling biological model of why kids who have experienced adversity have trouble learning.”Shonkoff was lead author on a Dec. 26, 2011 report titled “The Lifelong Effects of Early Childhood Adversity and Toxic Stress.” His co-author was pediatrician Andrew Garner, who was lead author on an accompanying policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics titled “Early Childhood Adversity, Toxic Stress, and the Role of the Pediatrician: Translating Developmental Science Into Lifelong Health.”last_img read more

He’s still making up his mind.”The Daily Star suggest Mourinho could be back at Chelsea as soon as this month if his Real Madrid side are knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester United.Meanwhile, Emmanuel Frimpong is in line for a free transfer to Fulham this summer, according to the Daily Mirror.Whites boss Martin Jol recently suggested he would be interested in taking the midfielder on loan again next season. But it is claimed that Frimpong is not part of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger’s long-term plans and can leave for nothing at the end of the current campaign. The Mirror also report that Chris Baird is set to sign a new contract at Craven Cottage. This page is regularly updated. 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 Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

SA software tracks umpires

first_img28 July 2005The International Cricket Council (ICC) is using South African-developed software to monitor decisions made by international umpires.According to the Council, more than 3 500 umpiring decisions are made in test matches and one-day international (ODI) series each year. About 90% on average are correct. However, since on-field decisions are based on an umpire’s judgement, controversial calls will feature in all matches. In an effort to ensure that umpiring standards are upheld and that decisions during a match are consistent and accurate, the ICC makes use of a sophisticated video-based umpire assessment system known as Umpirestat, devised by SA’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).All international cricket matches in which elite umpires are involved are recorded on video tape, which is subsequently sent to the ICC along with the referee and captains’ reports on the umpires’ performance. Umpirestat then permits a frame-by-frame analysis of all the calls made during a matchAccording to Dr Tony Kirkbride, manager of the CSIR’s Sports Technology Centre, an analyst extracts the video clips of all decisions, including any controversial calls, made by the umpires. These decisions can then be reviewed by the assessor or individual umpire. The ICC reviews the video clips to determine the accuracy of the umpires’ decisions and provides them with a comprehensive report. These assessments provide the basis on which the ICC’s Umpires and Referees Manager is able to discuss any areas of concern with the umpires directly and provide feedback underpinned with video footage. The CSIR developed the software from Crickstat, a programme its devised to analyse cricket matches. The ICC currently assesses umpires on five areas: correct decisions, coping with pressure, player management, communication, and application of regulations.Umpirestat underpins this process by providing accurate and objective data on decisions.Source: Council for Scientific and Industrial Research Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

Kayak Launches Direct Hotel Booking Feature as It Preps for an IPO

first_imgRelated Posts Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Travel search company Kayak has just announced that it will begin handling hotel reservations itself, rather than just referring customers to its partner sites when they are ready to book a room. This marks Kayak’s expansion beyond just aggregating travel information, so users can research and reserve their travel needs.Kayak is introducing the “Book Now” feature in limited beta, but the simple booking process will be available on its website and mobile apps in the coming weeks. Customers will still have the option to book their hotel rooms elsewhere. But the move will help keep users on the Kayak site, rather than driving them elsewhere to complete their purchases. The addition of direct hotel reservations will bring Kayak into competition with the likes of Orbitz and Expedia, but it comes as Kayak prepares for an initial public offering. When the company filed for its IPO last year, it reported that it had generated revenues of $128 million for the year-to-date, a 48% increase from the previous year. The site also said that it had seen an almost 40% increase in traffic. But as Kayak prepares for its IPO it needs to continue to grow that revenue and traffic and to fend off competitors in travel search. The most obvious of these is Google, which is in the process of buying the travel information provider ITA Software. In order to defend itself against this, Kayak announced last week that it had partnered with Bing in order to feature Kayak data in Bing search results. The Energy Star Homes Program Raises the Bar with Version 3

first_imgBeginning on January 1, 2012, homes enrolled in the Energy Star Homes program will need to comply with a new specification — dubbed Energy Star Version 3 — that is stricter than the current Version 2 specification.Version 3 will still offer builders two possible paths to obtaining an Energy Star label: a performance path and a prescriptive path. Since it’s impossible to provide a comprehensive description of Version 3 in a short article, I’ll confine myself to commenting on some of the highlights of the new specification.By now, Energy Star builders are familiar with the Thermal Bypass Checklist. The Version 3 specification has given the checklist a new name: the Thermal Enclosure System Rater Checklist.Joining that checklist are three new checklists:Among the requirements found in the Water Management checklist:While it’s hard to imagine that builders won’t be tempted to slip in the occasional 2×4 with a spot of mold on it, the checklist probably won’t slow down progress on many building sites, since the entire checklist lacks teeth. The only person required to verify that the builder has complied with the checklist is — drumroll, please — the builder.Energy Star builders will need to achieve HERS Index targets that are lower (that is, stricter) than the Version 2 HERS targets. Actual HERS targets will depend on the climate zone — in Vermont, most Energy Star homes will need a HERS Index between 60 and 70 — and the size of the home. That’s right — Version 3 includes a “size adjustment factor.” The bigger the home, the lower (stricter) the HERS target. The Energy Star program deserves credit for this long-overdue innovation. To calculate the size-adjustment factor, The Energy Star program assumes thatIf you plan to build a larger home — for example, a 3-bedroom home measuring 2,600 square feet — then the Energy Star program… Sign up for a free trial and get instant access to this article as well as GBA’s complete library of premium articles and construction details. CWG scam: Multi-pronged probe gathers steam

first_imgThe multi-pronged probe into the 2010 Commonwealth Games scam gathered steam on Tuesday with the ED registering a case for alleged Foreign Exchange violation, Income Tax sleuths conducting searches in the premises of businessman Sudhanshu Mittal and CBI looking into separate complaints of corruption. In the first case to be filed in the scam, the Enforcement Directorate is proceeding against a few officials of the Games’ Organising Committee(OC) for alleged violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act(FEMA) as part of its probe into alleged corruption in the Commonwealth Games. The identity of the officials were immediately not known. The Income Tax department conducted searches in the premises of Mittal, a BJP activist, and some consortiums in and around Delhi in connection with alleged financial irregularities in works related to the just concluded Games.More than 200 officials of the I-T department swooped down on about 30 premises, including in Chandigarh and Ludhiana, of four business consortiums, with a foreign entity in each, to probe contracts worth more than Rs 700 crore which were awarded to execute overlays and other works for the sporting extravaganza.I-T department sources said the first consortium– PICO international and Deepali Designs– with Mittal as Director and his relatives as other stakeholders, has bagged contracts worth about Rs 230 crore.Mittal, considered to be a close associate of former BJP President Rajnath Singh and late party leader Pramod Mahajan, had taken over the post of Director in the company in February this year and the contracts were awarded after that, I-T sources said.advertisementSources in the department said the I-T probe will specifically look into the contracts awarded by the Games OC and the role of its officials and contractors including charges of bribing.Official sources said Central Bureau of Investigation CBI) has also received 20 complaints regarding the Games which also include overlay works. A CBI team had even visited the OC office here on Monday.”CBI is working in close coordination with the ED in connection with the case registered by the Directorate under FEMA,” sources said.He said the complaints received by the CBI also include those pertaining to CPWD works, which are being looked into.”CBI is awaiting for reports from CVC, CAG and the I-T department. CAG has its own Central Technical Examiners and will do a financial audit. If something crops up, CBI will move in,” the sources said.Besides the special Committee instituted by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to probe the alleged corruption, the Comptroller and Auditor General, Central Vigilance Commission, Income Tax Department, Enforcement Directorate and the CBI are also probing OC officials. In another development, the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has found discrepancies in tenders and alleged misappropriation amounting to about Rs 8,000 crore. The discrepancies found by CVC related to payment to non-existent parties, wilful delay in execution of contracts, over-inflated price and bunglings in purchase of equipment through tendering have been noticed.Meanwhile, a report of the Delhi Development Authority has said “irregularities” and “deficiencies” were found in construction of the Games Village by private builder Emmar-MGF. Action is likely to be taken against the construction firm within a week.  EMAAR-MGF may face action for Village messPrivate builder EMAAR-MGF, which constructed the Commonwealth Games Village, is expected to face penal action this week as the government has found various “irregularities” and “deficiencies” in its work. The Delhi Development Authority, which had given the contract to EMAAR-MGF for construction of the Village for the sportpersons, submitted its interim report on Tuesday to the Union Urban Development Ministry, 12 days after being asked to do so, sources said.In its report, the DDA has said that there were various “irregularities” and “deficiencies” in the construction of 38 towers of the Village and the builder even exceeded the permissible limits of construction, the sources said. The DDA submitted its report in response to Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy’s letter to DDA on October 7 asking for a report on the alleged irregularities and deficiencies in the Village after several foreign delegates said the place was “unlivable” and “filthy”.”The report is under examination in the Ministry. The Ministry is likely to give a direction to the DDA in the matter shortly,” the sources said, indicating that some penal action could be taken against the builder within a week.Asked about the nature of action, the sources said there are “adequate provisions in the agreement” with the builder to take action against it for faulty execution of the project. These could be confiscation of security deposit or blacklisting of the company, they said.advertisementIn the letter, Reddy had asked DDA, which functions under the administrative control of the Urban Development Ministry, to file a report, saying the allegations had adversely affected the image of the DDA.There have been reports of delay as well as deficiency in the execution of the project which have not only adversely affected the image of DDA but also the Commonwealth Games 2010 as a whole,” Reddy said in the letter. The letter was written during the Games but it was kept under wraps so that the mega event passed off peacefully.last_img read more
