As amusing side-scrolling games from our past goes, it’s hard to do much better than DuckTales. Capcom’s best selling NES title wasn’t as popular as it probably deserved to be when it was first released, but Capcom and Disney saw fit to re-release this classic game and make it available on all three consoles. We took an evening and joined the cane wielding Scrooge McDuck on an HD remastered trip down memory lane. From the moment the game loaded on our Wii U and the classic 8-bit style music started blasting through the tiny speakers on the GamePad, you’re immediately transported back to the first time you play this game. Everything about the game has been updated to look great on any television, and Wii U owners will have the ability to play exclusively on the gamepad if you choose. The gameplay, the cut scenes, and the secret areas are completely intact. Even the post-mission victory dive in the money pit has been updated to look great on every screen.Choosing to play the game with a joystick instead of the D-Pad bears a slight complication in some of the levels that require Scrooge to jump from vine to vine or catch a chain at just the right moment. This game required that you press the up arrow on the D-Pad in order to grab chains and vines, and on a joystick this motion has to be both fast and precise or Scrooge will fall. It’s much easier to play these parts of the game with the D-Pad… if you haven’t already decided to play Ducktales this way out of nostalgia. Everything else about the gameplay translates to modern controllers with no problems, since the game really only had two other buttons. If you’re on a PS3 or Wii U, DuckTales Remastered is available starting today. Steam users will have access to the game on August 20, while Xbox Live users will be able to grab the game from the XBLA on September 11.If you’re interested in a collectors edition of the game, which is separate from theNES collectors tin, there will be a PS3 version available on August 20 that includes the download code for the game and a DuckTales pin.
