Indian Army won’t intervene in MS Dhoni gloves controversy

first_imgThe Indian Army is staying away from the controversy over star cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni and is unlikely to ask him to remove the logo resembling the insignia of the Para commando Special Forces from his wicket keeping gloves.Sources said the army won’t intervene in the matter and won’t take any action or even ask him to remove the symbol. The army says that there is no need for any intervention since the symbol is not the real insignia but only bears a resemblance. The special forces insignia is always in maroon background and has balidan written in Hindi. It’s always worn on the chest. The symbol on Dhoni’s gloves only resembles it, we can’t say it is the Special Forces insignia, said an army official.A dagger similar to the one that is used in the insignia could be seen on Dhoni’s gloves when India played South Africa in its opening match on June 5, in the ongoing cricket World Cup.Sources said the matter has been discussed but since it’s only a dagger without the other features of of the insignia, there is no need for any action. The International Cricket Council has asked Dhoni to remove the symbol throwing the rule book at him but BCCI has souught permission to allow him to use it.However, there is a mixed opinion within the military on the raging controversy. Some say Dhoni should be asked not to use the symbol as it’s a matter of pride for the forces and needs to be earned, others are of the view that theere is nothing wrong in it and too much is being read into it.advertisementDhoni, is an honourary Lt Colonel and was inducted in the Para Commandos Special Forces of the Territorial Army few years ago as a mark of respect and became a brand ambassador for the Indian Army.According to rules, no symbols that resemble the official insignias or logos of the military can be flaunted by people publicly. In fact section 140 of the Indian Penal Code makes it a punishable offence attracting a three month imprisonement or a fine of Rs 500 or both. Also Read | ICC red cards Dhoni gloves: Mahi in breach of ICC rulesAlso Read | Pakistan players wanted retaliatory celebration against India, PCB says noAlso Seelast_img read more
