A day after talks with the Patidar representatives, the Gujarat government on Wednesday announced the setting up of a body to help in the economic development of unreserved communities like the Patidars. The proposal was approved by the Cabinet at a meeting in Gandhinagar. The Cabinet also approved a plan to set up a commission, headed by a retired High Court judge, to conduct an inquiry into the alleged police excesses during the Patidar quota agitation. The government will withdraw all cases filed against the members of the community for rioting and damage to public property. “A new body will be created for the economic development of upper castes that have been excluded from the quota. This was the demand of the Patidars, and the government has accepted it,” Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said.
